Sultan Kudarat is a province in the Philippines located in the SOCCSKSARGEN region in Mindanao. Its capital is Isulan.
Sultan Kudarat was once a part of the former empire province of Cotabato. It was created as a separate province along with Maguindanao and North Cotabato on November 22, 1973, by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 341 signed by President Ferdinand E. Marcos.
The purpose of dividing Cotabato into three (3) smaller provinces is stated in Presidential Decree No. 341:
The name Sultan Kudarat given to the province was derived from a Muslim ruler, Sultan Muhammad Dipatuan Kudarat who begun to assert his leadership in the year 1619 and reigned the Sultanate of Maguindanao from 1625 to 1671. He is considered a national hero, and in his honor the province was named after him.
Sultan Kudarat is located on the southwestern part of the island of Mindanao. It is bounded on the north by the provinces of Maguindanao and Cotabato; on the south by South Cotabato and Sarangani; on the east by Davao del Sur; and on the west by the Celebes Sea. The province's total land area is 529,834 hectares (1,309,250 acres).
Kalama Hakaleleponi Kapakuhaili (1817–September 20, 1870) was a Queen consort of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi alongside her husband, Kauikeaouli, who reigned as King Kamehameha III. Her second name is Hazelelponi in Hawaiian.
She was the only child of Kona chief Naihekukui, who was commander of the native Hawaiian fleet at Honolulu. Her mother was Chiefess Iʻahuʻula, the younger sister of Charles Kanaʻina. Kanaʻina would become hānai (Hawaiian form of adoption) parent of the child.
Kalama means "The Torch" in the Hawaiian language.
The young Kamehameha III, the boy king at the time, was needing a suitable royal bride. Many of the traditional chiefs wanted a union between the king and his sister Nāhienaena, like it had been customary to in the Hawaiian court since the beginning of time, but the missionaries and Christian chiefs, who held the most political power, opposed this suggestion, calling it incest.
Kamanele, the daughter of Governor John Adams Kuakini, was proposed as the most suitable in age, rank, and education. The young king fell in love with Kalama in 1832. This angered his sister Kīnaʻu and many of the high chiefs. Kamehameha III married her on February 14, 1837. This was only a few months after Nahienaena's death.

Hidden in the depths of Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat is a unique sea creature. No one knows what they really are but residents consider it as a delicacy. It is also called “tamilok“, as it resembles the tubeworms found in mangroves. But this kind seems bigger and longer than the ordinary tubeworm. Even experts from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources are baffled with this discovery.
